The Cromwell Course 6078 yards
Hole 1 - Loosen up!
An accurate drive is needed to set up a reasonable approach to the green. Avoid the bunker on the right for the short hitters and the hidden bunker on the left, lying in wait for the longer hitter. Lay up on the bottom half of the green below the pin and this should leave you with a much easier up hill putt!
Hole 2 - Pond!
With a slight dog left to the right be sure to keep left over the hedge on the right is out of bounds protecting the 16th.The shortest of the par 4's but by no means the easiest. Make sure you accurately judge the distance to the green and avoid being caught out by the pond, lying directly in front to catch the miss hit shot. Finding the right part of the green is very important to help navigate the slope.
Hole 3 - Hedge.
A drivable par four for the longer hitters, but beware of the out of bounds to the right. This hole shares a double green with the 12th hole the front of which can kick many approach shots past the hole leaving a long up hill putt.
Hole 4 - Shortie
A short par 3 with an awful lot of troubles surrounding the green. This is not a long hole but an accurate approach is needed. Select the right club as out of bounds lurks close behind this green. Finding the right side of the green will leave the easier uphill putt. Avoid the bunkers on the left or face a bunker shot that is downhill all the way.
Hole 5 - Island
A challenging par 4 so aim up the left hand side for best position on this gently sloping fairway. The difficulty here is accurately judging the distance for an uphill second where you can’t see the bottom of the flag. Trust the yardage and favour the left side of the green or be faced with a chip or putt over some large undulations. Not forgetting to avoid the bunker to the left of the green with a pine tree located at the back
Hole 6 - Bungalow
One of the hardest holes on the course with a bad drive putting you in an awful amount of trouble. Out of bounds all up the right hand side, trees to the left and bunkers up the middle. Definitely one of the toughest drives on the course. A long straight drive is needed to carry the bunkers. Laying up can be difficult with the strategically placed bunker. A good approach shot can set up a birdie on this fairly tame green.
Hole 7 - Down again
A lovely downhill sweeping par 4. A tight drive through the trees opens up a green guarded by a deep bunker on the left. An approach coming in from the right hand side will help to take out this hazard.
Hole 8 - Woodpecker
A great birdie chance if you can find the green. Often a deceiving shot as it can play a little longer than it looks. Try to avoid the tree that looms on the right hand side and avoid missing the green left where the ditch is almost certainly the outcome.
Hole 9 - Halfway
Accuracy is paramount on this tight drive. Not the longest of holes but the drive plays slightly uphill and trees line the fairway either side. Anything off the fairway is sure to result in a dropped shot. A two tiered green awaits where finding the right level is essential to set up any chance of a one putt.
Hole 10 - Ditch
Downhill par four. The cross-bunkers need to be avoided off the tee so check your yardage. Approach is played over a hazard zig zagging the fairway to a green, which slopes from front to back so land your approach short of the green avoiding the greenside bunker on the right.
Hole 11 - Mackenzie
Long par three that does play slightly shorter than the yardage suggests. Anything left will definitely result in a drop shot. With a difficult undulating green makes two putting a challenge.
Hole 12 - Double green
A straightforward par 5, which as the name suggests shares its green with the 3rd hole. Mounds on the right will punish the hooked shot whereas the pond on the right awaits the slice. Heres your best chance to pick up shots, as the green is easily achieved in two.
Hole 13 - Bill and Ben
Bill and Ben are the two ponds awaiting the mishit drive on this hole. This hole has another green that slopes from front to back so judge your approach well.
Hole 14 - Plateau
A long par four that plays uphill. Bunkers left and right with a tree-lined fairway make for a tough tee shot. The green is fairly flat and is also guarded by bunkers on either side.
Hole 15 - Grand Canyon
Super par four. The hole plays downhill with a wide stream running in front of the green. The green itself slopes downhill from the back and any putt above the hole is going fast.
Hole 16 - Bunkers
Dog leg par four with well placed bunkers to catch the tee shot. The longer hitters can carry the corner leaving an easy approach to a large flat green.
Hole 17 - Long whack
Long par three. A deep bunker on the left and a valley in front guards the green.
Hole 18 - Home
Long par four of the medal tees. Out of bound to the left although an approach from the right can leave a difficult shot over the conifers short of the green |
